Everyone should be treated equally, even majorities.

Racism is a social construct designed by the white, for the benefit of the white. It puts down minorities and every non-white person. It is impossible to be racist against a white person, just as it is impossible to be sexist against a man or heterosexist against a straight person. To victimize the oppressor is not only a sign of white-guilt, but also ignorance. You can DISCRIMINATE against a white person, but you can not be RACIST against one. Just as you can DISCRIMINATE against a man, but you can not be SEXIST against one, etc. Come on, people.

Did we do this when Etta James died? NO rudeness intended.

For most black people, oppression is the default, so when you, as a white person, gripe about how you’ve been victimized by black people, you’re conveniently glossing over the fact that you still have more options and privileges in our society than they do, and your moaning about how they get “preferential treatment” you don’t qualify for is only the ridiculous cherry on top of the whiner-sundae. Those scholarships and grants exist to help rectify social ills that are centuries old and combat negative social trends that still have widespread effects today, so it comes off as disingenuous for you to complain about the special treatment black people enjoy when being a white man is inherently tantamount to qualifying for special treatment on many levels of society and smacks of the same sort of “be grateful for the scraps off our table” rhetoric a lot of white politicians clung to after the Civil Rights Act passed, essentially arguing that once black people were granted ostensibly equal rights, they were retroactively responsible for the socio-economic status Jim Crowe had left them in, an argument used even to this day to justify cutting social aid programs, to evict and demolish housing projects, and to keep public transportation out of “low income” (cheat sheet: that’s political and police code for “black”) neighborhoods.

harrypotterconfessions:

My confession was not meant to be racist in any way. I still understand it might have offended someone and therefore I now humbly apologize for everyone who felt insulted by it.
I’m trying my best to explain my point of view here: there are two kinds of whitewashing. The first one is intended, where the reader does it because they feel the character is not as good with their original ethnicity, whether it is asian, black or whatever it might be. In these cases whitewashing is stupid, ignorant, racist and just completely bullshit. I do notaccept this and neither should anyone else.
Then again, I see as there is also unintended whitewashing, that may have multiple explanations. In my case it was because of my sloppy reading as a child, as I focused more on the story than the characters. I also read only the 2 or 3 first books back then. I found out only couple months ago that Angelina was actually black (I haven’t seen the movies), as I entered the fandom. At that moment, I had thought Angelina as white for 8 or 9 years. That’s why my vision of white Angelina is very strong. As I don’t consider it racist, I haven’t thought of it as a problem and therefore haven’t tried to change it, either. And by the way, I’ve also blackwashed and “asianwashed” some white characters, so it’s all in balance ;)
If you feel like you want to discuss about this or have any questions, feel free to use my ask box. However, I’m asking you to stay appropriate (that does not mean you cannot disagree), as I feel like I’ve received enough hate for a one day :)

“Blackwashed and asianwashed”… oh my fucking god please stop. That was so wrong I can’t even. Like you think that magically makes it all better or equal. Wow.
I’m going to say the same exact thing as I said this morning, because you still don’t seem to get it — I completely understand that as a child, you would develop a strong image of a character in your mind and it was unintentional that you would whitewash a character. (I’m not going to lie, I did it too; though I also know that growing up, my own personal views of ethnicity and race were somewhat warped. Lovely little of growing up in a conservative, predominately white area, surrounded by racist people who do not realize or acknowledge their racism, and being one of the only POC kids in your age group.) I know it’s hard to change that image. But it’s the fact that you continue with that whitewashed image despite knowing that she is dark skinned, and the fact that you continue to intentionally deny and erase her heritage in favor of a white image just because it’s familiar to you that’s so offensive. You’re denying your racism while showing a clear example of it.
And again, as I said this morning on your other post, there’s explicit racism, and implicit. What you are doing is implicit. It’s still ignorance. But it is ALL whitewashing in this case, and it is ALL racism. You do not get to decide what is racist and what isn’t. It started off unintentional, sure, but that does not change the fact that it’s related to dominant white culture. That you even assume a character (especially one who is explictly stated as being a POC) is white is the problem - white is seen as the default or the norm. It all stems from racism. Whitewashing is ALWAYS racist, whether you intend to do it or not. And don’t you dare tell me that you “did it to a white character too so it’s totally ok!1!!”
You can keep your fake, backhanded apology. Try to actually learn about what you’re talking about.

Can we take a second to appreciate all the media 2012 is going to bring?

ataturningpoint:

  • The Perks of being a Wallflower (film)
  • The Hunger Games (film)
  • The Legend of Korra (series)
  • Pottermore (hopefully)
  • The Hobbit (film)

What could be better than this? Seriously.

  • Brave

The only thing that could be better would be If Korra would just air!

Can we get some reblogs on this story? It’s a 10 week old baby, no Amber Alert, no media attention. Nothing. This is in New York. And yes, she was missing since Jan 25th!!!! Police are asking the public for help in locating a missing 10-week-old girl. Madison Green was in the custody of Schenectady County Child Protective Services, but was last seen with her biological mother, Janel Davis. Police say they are concerned for the health, safety, and welfare of the girl. A missing child bulletin issued on Wednesday by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice said that Madison may be in need of medical attention and could in Albany. The bulletin also said that the mother and child may use CDTA buses for transportation. 28-year-old Janel Davis is described as a black female, 5’5” and weighing 180 pounds, with brown eyes and blond hair. She may also go by “Ginger,” and is known to wear blue contact lenses. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Schenectady Police Department at (518) 382-5264 or the Schenectady County Child Protective Services at (800) 342-3720 Read more: http://www.cbs6albany.com/articles/schenectady-1290193-old-police.html#ixzz1lHbqPnrr

foreverfullmetal asked: Do you think that, in Korra, they’ll show Aang actually dying? Because I don’t think i’d be able to watch that.

avataraang:

I remember there was snippet of info that came out of Comic-Con 2010 that said Mike and Bryan were deliberating whether to have a flashback to Aang’s death. I pray for my emotional wellbeing that they decided against it.

We know Aang died of old age (or Avatar Spirit exhaustion, whatever you want to call it) so it’s not like there’s some massive plot point there. I think it would be quite shocking for a lot of kids to see the main character a lot of them grew up with die onscreen so my personal preference is that they don’t show it.

If it’s not graphic, I’d like to see it.
